Nature Journals
The Center believes that children will learn a great deal about nature through the process of observing and recording. The recording may take the form of descriptive writing and/or drawing – both are of equal value. We believe the best way to enable this process is through journaling. All of the activities at the Center make use of journaling. And, we have developed an Exploration kit, to be used by students as they participate in our activities, to provide students tools that will help them observe nature and record their thoughts, impressions, questions, and ideas.
Rather than provide a single, pre-made Nature journal, CNRC will provide educators the opportunity to design a journal that fits the abilities and needs of their class or group. We will provide a 3-ring binder and a wide variety of journal pages, including blank paper, graph paper, lined paper (for K-2 as well as older grades), and paper with guiding questions and prompts. The educator will choose the pages and assemble the journals (all pages are pre-punched for the binder.) At the end of the activity, students will remove the pages from the binder, design covers using heavy stock colored paper, then bind the journal with fasteners or string.
