Nature Journaling Hike
The focus for this activity is on
learning how to create Nature journals that emphasize writing as a way to
clarify and articulate thoughts and ideas, and drawing as a way to sharpen
observation and problem solving skills.
This is a 2 hour workshop during which students will begin by learning basic
descriptive writing and drawing skills, then visit a variety of different
settings and environments at the Center where they will make use of those skills. Optional work may include the use of
microscope for closer study of collected samples. As a closing activity, journals will be
assembled and the participants will present their work to the group.

Students will examine plant and insect life as well as the soil in the selected area, with links to such content areas as food chains and webs, habitats, and relationships between plants, animals, and soil found in the area. The description of the area and its contents will be recorded in a Nature Journal.
